Newton Aycliffe Celebrated its 75th Anniversary in 2023
The 75th Anniversary of Newton Aycliffe is took place in 2023 and the Town Council commemorated the historic occasion with events across the year.
Newton Aycliffe was designated as a new town in April 1947, but the actual birth of the town has been widely regarded as being 1948.
The key dates in relation to the birth of the town are 28th June 1948 which marked the “cutting of the first sod” ahead of the construction of the first houses, and 9th November 1948 which was when the keys were handed over to the first resident of the town.
Much more information on the history of the town can be viewed elsewhere on this website including more about the history of Aycliffe and the Story of Newton Aycliffe

We’re interested to hear what you did for Aycliffe’s 75th birthday too!
St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School are getting involved
Headteacher Kirsty Evans got in touch to say, “This year, Newton Aycliffe is celebrating its 75th birthday. To commemorate this, we are holding a photography competition within the school. We would like to celebrate the awe and wonder of God’s creations in our local landscape”.
The Mayor will be judging the competition and the top three will go on display in the council offices.
The Town Council thought this was a great idea and to add to this, we too are asking for photos on the theme of what’s great about Aycliffe in 2023, to hopefully create an archive of the town in its 75th year. Send your entries to the Aycliffe 75 submit your memory
