Tony, the local postman for Aycliffe Village, was nominated by resident Helen Rickaby, who said: “He shows an interest in everything going on in the village and shows great concern for the wellbeing of less able and elderly members of our community.”

Councillors unanimously agreed at the full Council meeting on 16th September that Tony should receive a Community Recognition Medal and certificate.

The Mayor of Great Aycliffe, Councillor Neil Collinson, presented the award and said: “Congratulations, Tony, on a well-deserved award.”

Tony, who was very surprised to receive the award, said: “I feel very humbled to receive this award and grateful to the village residents for acknowledging the commitment I’ve given to my job over the years.  It’s nice to be appreciated.  Also thank you to Helen Rickaby for nominating me and for the great effort making the post box topper marking my 44 year anniversary and now Newton Aycliffe’s longest serving postman with Royal Mail.” He added that he had recently helped to unblock a residents hoover, taking it in his stride as all part of the day’s work!

His award reflects the purpose of Great Aycliffe Town Council’s Community Recognition Award Scheme, launched in 2022 to shine a well-deserved spotlight on local people who go the extra mile. The scheme celebrates the dedication, commitment and outstanding contributions that help make the Parish of Great Aycliffe such a special place.
