VE Day 80 – Newton Aycliffe Remembered
To mark the historic moment the Second World War ended in Europe in 1945, events took place around Newton Aycliffe starting on Thursday 1st May, when union jacks were raised in the Town Park, this eye-catching display will be in place until after VJ Day on 15th August 2025.
From Tuesday 6th until Saturday 10th May 2025 the Town Council Offices were lit up red, white and blue along with other national buildings, reflecting our pride in the sacrifice of all veterans.
On Wednesday 7th May, Mr Jeff Knapton the President of Rotary Great Aycliffe presented the Town Clerk with two VE Day 80 flags, which were raised at the St Clare’s Church and the Town Council Offices. The donation was gratefully received on behalf of the local community.
On Thursday 8th May the Mayor of Great Aycliffe John Clark attended a church blessing at St Clare’s Church which was given by Rev John Musson.
Great Aycliffe Town Council along with the Army Reserves, Air Cadets and members of the community marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a poignant evening event at sunset on the Oak Leaf Sports Complex field, honouring the courage and resilience of a generation. The march was led by a piper, the Mayor of Great Aycliffe lit the beacon, the last post was played and a two minute silence was observed. We would like to thank everyone who took part in marking this historic occasion.
On Saturday 10th May the community came together to celebrate, there was a free shuttle bus service from the town to the Oak Leaf Sports Complex field, provided by Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society. The sun shone and the entertainment kicked off with Aycliffe and Brancepeth Brass Band playing a wonderful compilation of well-known tunes. Newton Aycliffe Piped Band followed with a rousing and emotional performance of highland favourites.
The crowd was then treated to a glorious performance by the Shine Choir, with a medley of toe tapping tunes. Aycliffe Dance Academy then took to the stage and entertained us with a variety of show stopping routines.
The finale of the event was singer Claire Louise, she regaled the audience with 1940’s sing along classics and danced her way through the decades with hit after hit. The crowd sang and danced along with her, I’m sure a great time was had by all!
